Organization history

Founded in the early 1990s as Low Impact Mountain Bikers and revitalized in 2010 as MTB Missoula, for many years the organization was enthusiastically volunteer-run. Hiring professional staff in 2017 helped advance the org as a local resource for design and maintenance of recreational trails, working to ensure a positive and fun user experience while addressing factors like invasive weeds, wildlife impacts and user conflict. Through strategic planning in 2022, the org's mission was expanded to include outreach efforts intended to create mountain biking experiences for under-experienced local youth. Outreach initiatives include the Missoula Youth Mountain Bike Library and facilitated rides with Title 1 schools, Native American, and refugee youth.
In early 2025, with the goal of increasing visibility and affiliation with more local mountain bikers, the organization rebranded as Missoula Mountain Bike Coalition. MMBC organizes roughly 1800 hours of volunteer service to maintaining trails and urban bike parks while advocating for responsible use of multi-use trails and retained access to storied backcountry rides.
